Sunday jazz lunch   | By Colin | Wednesday, 15 January 2014
Having little idea what to expect, we ventured to Kloof Street House for their advertised Sunday lunch and jazz session. Though the music is billed as being from 12-4pm, the musicians only arrived and got started some time after 1pm. Not to worry - the music was excellent: just a double bass, a saxophone and a keyboard, playing lovely mellow tunes. The band being stationed inside the house in front of a large open window means that the music is never overbearing, but perfectly pitched in the background. So music was a definite win.

More importantly, the food was also very good. Being only two of us, we could not sample too widely, but had the two fish dishes on the menu: one Norwegian salmon (served with raw fennel, orange, pine nut and raisin salad), and the fish of the day (blue fish), served with cauliflower mash, olives and pangrattato. Both were beautifully prepared. (And everything that we managed to spy being delivered to other tables looked great too).

This is not a cheap restaurant, but the service is efficient and personable, the food delicious, and the atmosphere very lovely. We look forward to going back for more.

  • Situated in the trendy Biscuit Mill complex, the vibe is modern and buzzy. The menu is small, but still offering enough choice to warrant a few return visits to try other dishes. What we did try justifies the returns. Creamy risotto, light gnocchi and innovative deserts. the wine list offers a good variety, some rather expensive but some good value as well. The service was friendly and attentive.
The best SA Italian? I personally prefer La Sosta, but this is a close second (and much closer to home).

guia de los movimientos de musculacion mujeres frederic delavier   Hout Bay, Cape Town
    Cheynes   | By Colin | Friday, 10 January 2014
We have been meaning to get to visit Cheynes new Hout Bay location for a couple of months now, having heard very positive reviews. So it was a pleasure to finally find ourselves in Hout Bay for a recent impromptu Saturday lunch.

All in all, the experience both did, and did not, disappoint. Previous reviews have been spot on in that Cheyne is imaginative and creative - and mostly successfully so - with flavours and pairings. We were most intrigued, for example, with a dish of "deep fried milk" - we are still not sure what it was, but it was probably the winner of the day, packed with fantastic flavour.

So, some dishes very good, and some less so: the "firecracker crayfish" is essentially a very generous portion of tempura crayfish tails, but one sadly too generous on the batter, as a slight insult to the beautiful crayfish tails. The sticky duck was delicious, but a let down to find that the accompaniment of "caramelised cashews" were in fact just plain old (slightly stale) nuts. The lamb rendang, similarly, while an excellent curry, let down on the advertised side of licthi-sweet potato crisps, which turned out to be just quartered litchis.

My wife was particularly excited to see a rum baba on the dessert menu (despite the previous and rather generous portions), but was disappointed to find this to be more of a syrup-soaked (and decidedly non-boozy) waffle-like dessert - nice enough, but no rum baba.

We did have a (mostly) delightful lunch, and remain convinced that Cheyne is a great chef. But avoiding these little oversights could have lifted it to outstanding with very little extra effort. That was a pity.

    Rude Staff & Management   | By Luke | Thursday, 09 January 2014
My Fiance has been planning our wedding dinner at Paternoster lodge for 3 months now. Unfortunately the managers and staff are clueless!, the never responded to our emails when we wanted to confirm dates and times (as they screwed it up) plus, when you call to speak to a manager or owner, they are never there. The staff also never pass on messages and to date none of the management has returned my calls! I would take caution organizing an event here.

Winelands Bistro   | By Lew | Sunday, 05 January 2014
Followers of Pierre the modest yet talented owner chef of Le Bon Vivant in Franschhoek, such as ourselves, were delighted by news of the opening by him in conjunction with the owners of GlenWood Vineyards, outside Franschhoek, of Le Bon Vivant @ GlenWood. Billed as a 20 seater bistro, on the sunny day in the holiday season with its lovely views, we noted that whilst there was one chef, there certainly had been additional tables and chairs added. After what we thought was a fairly steep wine tasting fee of R50 per head, we were allocated an outdoor table and an excellent waitress. Pierre is well known for his signature Dutch bitterballen, and those by the chef he has at this second venue were as authentic and delicious as ever. With the GlenWood owners doing their rounds to greet guests at the tables, the interminably long wait for our mains, ruled out any question of desserts, to the genuine embarramsment of our waitress (whilst those at the table alongside us, left unhappy, and made that clear). All could be rectified with additional kitchen staff and sticking to the number they designed it for. A lovely location, but perhaps a return to Le Bon Vivant in the village before we venture here again.

Scenic and Special   | By Lew | Sunday, 05 January 2014
In spite of a crowded holiday season, uncertain weather outdoors on the day and a last minute call, we were very helpfully accommodated at The Pool Room at Oak Valley Elgin. The magnificent scenic surrounds are inspiring, and there is great innovation in the restaurant itself. A Caesar Salad was good but not a true Caesar Salad. the Marrow Bone starter was the real thing, enhanced by salt, parsley and capers and the delicious breads on offer. We saw great steaks being served whilst the pork products are from free range animals reared there and are delicious, whilst gnocchi was excellent. Not the biggest fans of Oak Valley wines, however we will be back to enjoy the food, lovely breads and deli items on sale, and for the excellent management who are a credit to this venue.
